A recommended job-mixed firebrick mortar is as follows (by volume):

  • 1 part Portland Cement (type II) Caution: do not substitute mortar mix for Portland Cement.
  • 1 part fireclay
  • 1 part sand

Keep joints as thin as possible.

Suggested Break-in Procedure

Step 1: After all masonry work is complete, it should be allowed to cure for 40 days before any fire is built.

Step 2: The first four fires should be relatively small in order to assure that all moisture has been removed from the fireplace. After the fourth small fire, the fireplace is ready for a full winter’s normal use.

It is suggested that Step 2 be repeated each fall as spring and summer rains, as well as cleanings, do reintroduce moisture to the fireplace.

Please Note: Manufacturers suggest a chimney cap (metal, masonry or other) be used in conjunction with all masonry fireplaces. Also building crews should never be allowed to use the fireplace to dispose of rubbish or for heating purposes.
